The game is, in fact, part of a family – well a couple – with a cat-themed sister called Kitty Cabana, which looks like a way of testing the theory that there are “dog people” and “cat people”.

Whatever you think about that – is it a lazy way for a developer to turn a single piece of development into multiple titles? – there’s no denying that Microgaming’s reputation as one of the biggest and best gaming companies in the world is very well deserved, and this is a novel game that delivers with looks and function.

Bark worse than its bite

The look is doggy, with hounds decked out as, erm, how to say this… aristocratic Victorian characters serving as the high-paying symbols on the reels. In fact, they’re great fun: the top payer of a great set of images is a big St Bernard-style chap who pays out a 4.5x stake for a full set of five.

I liked the soundtrack delivered by the Hound Hotel slot machine, which is retro and quite amusing in its own way, fitting into the action well.

The game logo is the wild, paying 50x stake for a full house. The scatter is a little doggie (a Mexican one I think) with a silver salver. The second set of wilds called “dashing wilds” pop-up as a sort of re-spin feature. In the base game, the standard wild can be super stacked.
