Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs Slot Overview

It’s hard to believe, but it has been nearly fifteen years since the original Tomb Raider slot burst onto the scene and captured our hearts. Back then it was one of the first video slots, and its graphics were cutting edge. It quickly proved its worth, and like the Angeline Jolie movie, it spawned a huge following.

Temples and Tombs is Microgaming’s third incarnation of everyone’s favourite tomb raider Lara Croft. It’s been several years since Lara’s last outing and the passage of time has resulted in vastly improved visuals and updated game features.

Along with brand new shiny graphics is the inclusion of the Rolling Reels feature, and a massive number of multipliers. These new elements have changed the game dynamic, but is it better than its predecessors? Time to join the fearless heroine as she rappels into yet another temple complex in search of ancient treasure.

Numbers

Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs slot has a typical Microgaming setup that involves 3 rows, 5 reels, and 243 ways to win. The RTP has been fixed at 96.05%, and bet sizes can be set from 0.20 coins up to 20 coins for the bold and brave.

Lara is more than happy for iOS and Android users to accompany her tomb raiding, as well as tablet and desktop adventurers. The game has three different jackpots of different amounts, the juiciest being 5000x the wager.

To win, developers have bolted on the popular Rolling Reels feature. If this is new for you, then how it works is that when a winning combination lands, the symbols that made it up disappear off the reels. New symbols then fall in to take their place, which can result in another win. This process repeats again and again until there are no more winners, and it is time for a new spin. This alternative win feature is a joy when it works well, which it does with Temples and Tombs. Not only do wins cascade into each other, but a multiplier kicks in and raises by one with each winner. The only downside to this method is that because wins and values snowball, individual symbol values tend to be lower, which is the case here.

Symbols and extras

There are 10 base game symbols which feature graphics inspired by the Lara Croft games. The top payers are the ones depicting Lara herself. We get Lara on her motorbike, swinging through the air, pointing a gun, and Lara just looking tough. These range in value from 0.4x for three of a kind, up to 10x the stake for five of a kind.

The golden gods, which look like Sobek and Anubis, are next at 0.5x for three up to 3x for five. Rounding out the bottom end are the tools of adventure – a canteen, a flaming torch, a bag, and a grappling hook. Three of these are worth from 0.15x the stake up to five of a kind for 2.4x the stake. None of these symbols is going to cause much excitement on their own – the value simply isn’t there. Fortunately, we have multipliers to swing in and save the day.

Free spins and multipliers

During the base game, the multiplier trail runs 1x, 2x, 3x, and 5x which is a welcome boost. During the free spins, however, the multiplier trail is even more attractive at 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x which is outstanding and can cause payouts to blow through the temple roof.

Free spins are triggered by the Book icon, and three of these generous symbols award eight free spins. The golden scarab wilds have the excellent ability to stand in for all symbols, including the book, and free spins can be retriggered while they are in play.

Jackpots galore

This being a Lara Croft game, there must be a treasure, right? While not boasting the epic multipliers of the original slot, the latest version does offer several ways of unearthing a valuable find.

One of these is the jackpot feature. Look above the reels to find the Minor, Major and Grand Jackpots which are worth 15x, 100x, and 5,000x your stake. Each wild that lands gets added to the golden pot, and the more that are collected, the better the chance is for winning it.

What makes Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs slot so special?

Ever since Temples and Tombs was announced at the iGaming conference in London, it has been on the radar of keen slots fans. It has been quite a wait since the previous instalment in the franchise, has it been worth it? For the most part, the answer is yes. And yet, it has and it hasn’t, we had mixed feelings about the game.

Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs slot is an excellent game, full of bonuses, free spins, and a generous jackpot. The graphics are gorgeous and its soundtrack does it proud. In short, the game does everything it says on the tin and provides a ton of thrills. What it doesn’t have is that certain quality that makes it an instant classic. Perhaps the franchise has been so successful that our expectations were unrealistic? Has Lara Croft become a victim of her own success?

Don’t get the wrong message though. This is a fantastic slot that has the ability to unleash thrills and coins in equal measure. Aside from the three jackpots, this is primarily done when it combines its most profitable elements. For example, the Rolling Reels feature is a blast when it links several wins in a row. Further, when this occurs during the free spins section, it is pure joy to behold. And when that happens on consecutive free spins, well, you’ll be ecstatic that you packed your satchel and joined Lara on the raid!

Temples and Tombs slot is unlikely to shake the gaming world up like the original did but it is a fine game and a respectable addition to the Lara Croft franchise.
