Hall of the Mountain King Slot Game Review

Hall of the Mountain King slot is about as niche as it gets. It is partially inspired by an old classical song called ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’, by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Trust us, once you hear it you will recognise it. If that wasn’t enough, Quickspin has added hints of World of Warcraft, Avatar, and Lord of the Rings to spice things up. The result is an odd mix of trolls, fantastic setting, and highbrow culture. Don’t ask us exactly how this all works, but it does.

Quickspin has ended up with a truly unique outing that looks and sounds fabulous and has mega doses of action thrown in for good measure. It’s as if the creative team at Quickspin put a bunch of different ideas into a hat, picked several out, and Mountain King was the result. Fortunately for us slot fans, what we have here is a mish-mash of concepts that works together like a Swiss clock. Apparently, developers at Quickspin were ecstatic with the choice of theme, and this enthusiasm permeates the game.

The reels are set in a mountainous region, reminiscent of Norway in the summertime. Pine trees dot the fecund valley before a mountain where the trolls reside. It’s a mythical scene, and with the building intensity of the soundtrack and the action, we head off for some troll slaying.

The mountain is cold but the rewards are hot

Okay, so not everything in this Hall of the Mountain King slot is offbeat and whacky. The setup, for one, is pretty conventional and is made of up 5 reels, 3 rows, and 20 pay lines. The variance level is high meaning that the Mountain King might be a bit stingy with his gifts for some players, but if he likes you he will certainly reward you.

Speaking of rewards, the top theoretical payout is 7326x the stake when the symbols go your way. And at its highest betting level of 100 coins, we are talking about some serious treasure under those hills. For those that don’t want to bet so high, the stakes can be lowered to 0.20 coins per spin.

Mountainous game symbols

There are ten base game symbols, five low pay and five high pay. The lesser value symbols are 10, J, Q, K, and A, all done up in a trollish manner. These unexciting symbols are worth from 0.25x the stake for three of a kind, up to 6.25x for five of a kind.

Our troll buddies make up the five high pay bunch. Starting with the blue troll (0.75x, 1.5x, 7.5x), the green troll warrior (0.75x, 2x, 10x), the purple female troll (1.25x, 4x, 15x), the golden lady troll (1.25x, 5x, 20x) and the mighty king at the top of the pile (2x, 7.5x, 40x). They offer pretty good value really, especially when you take into account the multipliers that are also at hand to step in and make your day.

The wild is a precious golden disk with an artistic W placed in the centre. The wild has a lot to do. It can stand in for any of the other paying symbols, and it is worth 2x, 7.5x, and 40x the stake for 3,4 or 5 of a kind. Each wild can activate one multiplier each as well, with the maximum being x5 during the base game and a stellar x15 during the free spins.

The final symbol to note down is the scatter, which is the Warhammer. Three of these at once trigger the Free Spins feature, injecting another level of mayhem into an already chaotic game.

Free spins in the king’s hall slot machine

Not content with a typical free spin game, Quickspin has made this a unique and memorable feature as well. They have split the game up into three sections, each with its own particular mechanism for improving winnings.

The first stage is all about symbol upgrades. During the spins, the reels clear to reveal the mountain king demolishing a block of stone with his Warhammer. This action removes one of the low pay symbols from the reels and replaces it with one of the higher value picture icons. When the top block on the left side column is destroyed the player moves on to stage two.

Stage two introduces Whirling Wilds into the picture. Now when the Mountain Kings smashes a block, it releases Whirling Wilds that buzz around the top of the reels, waiting patiently. Again, when the top block is smashed it is time to enter level three.

The Whirling Wilds finally get released in the third stage and drop at random onto the reels turning symbols into wilds. There always three spins during the third stage, when they are over so is the feature.

What makes Hall of the Mountain King slot so special?

Well, what doesn’t make it special? Each part of the game has been brought together and forged at an insanely hot temperature. Whoever thought of using Grieg’s famous musical piece first as inspiration, and secondly as the backing track deserves a firm pat on the back. It’s one of the rare moments of genius that seems ridiculous but which works like a charm.

Being high variance there can be lulls in the action as you work your way through the dud spins. And when the novelty of the concept has waned these moments can drag. However, the Hall of the Mountain King slot has a pretty epic card up his sleeve reserved for these very moments which is the fantastic free spins feature.

One thing you will like about the free spins is the way they seem to go on and on. Spins carry on while the big man, sorry, troll, smashes things to bits with his hammer, powering up multipliers and symbol upgrades. It’s a long, drawn-out ride that can result in a horde of coins when it is done. Then, it’s back to the main game, and you will want that free ride beneath the mountain again, just one more time.
